Text: Jan De Vylder

AVAILABLE from 1 July

Architect-artist Jan De Vylder has been systematically repainting De Standaard Magazine with white paint every week for quite some time. He then hangs the magazine to dry on the laundry rack.
De Vylder sees this act of repainting as a poetic response to today's confusion between culture and consumption.
Posture Editions assembled a selection from the more than 1,000 overpaintings into a reference work where the many spreads from the magazines play with the hidden or obscured in a radical way and where the viewer is encouraged to look for the subtle differences within the almost nothing.

The publication ‘ZONDAG SCHILDER MAGAZINE’ also includes a text by De Vylder in which he relates the act of overpainting to the search for negative spaces, openings and fade-outs within his architectural practice and within his view of life.

'I draw. And tinker. And paint. PART-TIME AMATEUR TOURIST as background. (...)
ZONDAG SCHILDER MAGAZINE is about ZONDAG (SUNDAY) and AMATEUR and some HANGING AROUND. HANGING AROUND moves between being a tourist and being a traveller. (...)
Yes like the discourse, but work first. Free. The AMATEUR is free. The TOURIST is sometimes TRAVELLER. And twice PART-TIME is FULL TIME, being dedicated every moment.'

In 2020, Posture Editions published its first book with Jan De Vylder: ‘WHAT. IS. THIS?’ (N° 38), a wide selection from his numerous Moleskine sketchbooks. The book has since sold out.

De Vylder's new publication ‘ZONDAG SCHILDER MAGAZINE’ — Posture Editions N° 59 — will be presented at C.I.V.A. Brussels, on Wednesday 27 August at 19:00.
There, Jan De Vylder will present the installation PAINTINGS ON A MAGAZINE and enter into conversation with Christophe Van Gerrewey.
