The artist’s publication entitled ‘95G_DOKA’ presents a series of photograms by Maria Blondeel (b. 1963, Halle), created through experimentation with diazotype—a process formerly used by architects for printing plans and by printers for producing proofs.

The 72 photograms were created by placing objects on light-sensitive diazo paper and exposing them to daylight in Maria’s studio. Where the objects shield the paper from sunlight, the characteristic purple-blue colour emerges.

This series of works, created in 1995, was presented on several occasions within a scenographic installation, to which Maria added sensors. Influenced by the ambient light and the movement of visitors, the sensors activated a sound system, making each installation a unique experience.

The objects that Maria places in the space and on the paper are not merely random photographic props. Darkroom equipment such as developing tanks, tongs, clamps, negative sheets and glass plates, as well as electrical cables and chains, film loaders, spotlights, boxes and storage systems, are used 72 times as extras in a ballet on paper. The book aims to document Maria’s artistic processes and to explore the broader conceptual framework within which the work is situated.

Apart from this underlying content and technical features, the book aims above all to be an anthology of visually striking images, evocative and poetic. The compositions sometimes yield abstract, evocative, but above all highly varied and surprising images. Despite its technological nature—however paradoxical that may sound—Maria’s work touches on something elusive.

With an introduction by Frank Maes and a text by Léon von Prada (Dutch/English).

In the context of the book, two exhibitions are being held and a number of events have been planned.
